Recent findings highlight cybersecurity challenges posed by remote working for UK SMEs.
- A survey by Markel Direct shows nearly 25% of SMEs are concerned about securing remote work environments.
- Increased sophistication of cyber threats ranks as top concern for 62% of SMEs.
- Many businesses lack clear procedures in case of a cyber attack.
- Despite challenges, UK SMEs are investing in preventive cybersecurity measures.
A new study by Markel Direct reveals significant cybersecurity concerns among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK due to the shift towards remote working. Nearly 25% of these businesses are worried about how to secure remote work environments as employees operate away from traditional office settings.
The survey, which included insights from 500 SME owners, emphasizes that 23% see securing remote working as a significant challenge. Moreover, a substantial 62% are concerned about the growing sophistication of cyber threats, underscoring the need for enhanced security measures.
When it comes to protecting company data accessed remotely, the majority of businesses are taking steps to mitigate risks. Specifically, 52% of SMEs use virtual private networks (VPNs), 48% focus on employee training regarding secure remote practices, and 46% have implemented remote access policies and controls.
Alarmingly, the study found that 49% of SMEs would be at a loss if faced with a cyber attack, lacking a definitive plan of action. Additionally, 69% do not have an established cybersecurity policy, which could leave them vulnerable in the evolving digital landscape.
Despite the gaps in preparedness, some SMEs are adopting preventive measures. Notably, 72% have invested in antivirus or anti-malware software to protect their systems. Regular updates of system software are conducted by 69% of businesses, and multi-factor authentication is used by 52%, providing an additional layer of security.
Rob Rees from Markel Direct emphasizes the critical nature of staying ahead of cyber threats, especially with the rise of AI-driven attacks. He suggests that a strong cybersecurity policy and relevant insurance could offer protection and support in the event of a targeted attack. Nearly half of SMEs unsure how to respond to attacks highlights a significant risk. Markel Direct offers its policyholders a cyber response helpline for expert guidance during such incidents.
The shift to remote work presents notable cybersecurity challenges for UK SMEs, highlighting a need for stronger security frameworks.
