The Glasswater Locks scheme in Birmingham has commemorated a significant milestone by reaching its highest construction point. A topping-out ceremony was held for this extensive residential and commercial project, developed by the housebuilder St Joseph. This project, located on a three-acre brownfield site, overlooks the scenic Digbeth Branch Canal, offering a prime canalside setting.
This development aims to rejuvenate the surrounding area by constructing 762 apartments. The mixed-use scheme will also feature various amenities for residents, 20,000 square feet of commercial space, and enhanced public areas. An expansive network of pedestrian and cycle routes further integrates the development into the existing urban fabric.
At the heart of the scheme are six separate blocks, with the Glasswater Tower standing as the tallest, reaching a total of 37 stories. This ambitious project also underscores a commitment to local economic and social development through training and employment initiatives. A collaborative effort between St Joseph, The Skills Centre, Birmingham City Council, and the West Midlands Combined Authority has resulted in accredited training for 122 individuals and employment opportunities for 51 local residents.
Piers Clanford, chairman of St Joseph, expressed pride in the employment and skills initiative achievements, highlighting its positive impact on the local community. “The project is breathing new life into this brownfield site,” remarked Clanford, emphasizing the transformative potential of Glasswater Locks as future residents prepare to move in next year.
The Glasswater Locks project signifies a major step forward in urban regeneration, enriching Birmingham’s landscape and community.
