Moonpig has unveiled an advanced artificial intelligence handwriting tool designed to replicate the personal touch of handwritten messages in customizable cards. This innovation allows users to digitally create their own handwriting by drawing each letter of the alphabet in both upper-case and lower-case, effectively turning it into a personalized font stored in their accounts.
According to Moonpig’s chief executive, Nickyl Raithatha, the initiative addresses a longstanding customer concern. He stated, “Handwriting has always been a big barrier for people not wanting to send cards online because they don’t feel it’s personal enough.” This tool aims to bridge the gap between digital convenience and the warmth of a handwritten message.
The development of this AI tool took a dedicated team a full year, demonstrating Moonpig’s commitment to enhancing customer experiences through technology. In addition to the handwriting tool, the company is poised to introduce AI-generated stickers by the end of the year, broadening the array of personalization choices available to customers.
Despite this technological advancement, Moonpig has reported a significant financial challenge, swinging to a pre-tax loss of £33.3 million for the six months ending October, compared to an £18.9 million profit the previous year. However, revenue increased by 3.8% to £158 million, largely due to robust sales in the Moonpig brand, which helped mitigate difficulties faced in their experiences division.
Moonpig’s AI handwriting tool and upcoming innovations highlight a strategic push toward personalized digital communications amid financial challenges.
