Prince fans are set to experience the ultimate tribute to the legendary musician as the house made famous in the 1984 movie Purple Rain is now available for rent on Airbnb. As the film celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, the Minneapolis residence, central to the movie’s storyline, has been transformed into an immersive, once-in-a-lifetime accommodation experience.
The modest, white two-story house, located in Minnesota, may look unassuming from the outside, but inside it’s a nostalgic homage to the Purple Rain era. The property has been unveiled as part of Airbnb’s limited-edition Icons series, offering exclusive stays that allow guests to step into the shoes of a music legend.
Although the home never served as Prince’s personal residence, it was purchased by the late artist in 2015. Now, for the first time ever, the house has been opened to the public for an intimate glimpse into the world of The Kid—the character Prince portrayed in the film.
A Tribute Curated by Those Who Knew Prince Best
Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, former members of Prince’s band The Revolution and co-stars in the movie, are the hosts for this unique Airbnb listing. “We’re so excited to share this piece of Prince’s history with the world,” they said in the listing. “We’ve filled the house with memorabilia that offers a rare insight into Prince’s creative process during the Purple Rain era.”
The home has been carefully curated to reflect Prince’s life and legacy, incorporating real-life elements and previously unreleased tracks, along with personal items from the musician’s own collection. Fans will not only see Prince’s world but also live it—down to the smallest details.
An Immersive Prince Experience
While the house has been restored to resemble its appearance in the movie, new features have been added to enhance the fan experience. Guests can sleep in a replica of The Kid’s basement bedroom, complete with lavender pillows and a 1980s-style cassette player stocked with Prince’s demo tapes.
One of the standout areas is the home’s music lounge, where guests can play instruments such as guitar, drums, and an upright piano. QR codes scattered throughout the house offer commentary from Melvoin and Coleman, adding an extra layer of immersion to the stay.
The iconic purple color associated with Prince is naturally present throughout the home. There’s even a piece of wall art that humorously references the hit song Let’s Go Crazy with purple bananas, adding to the quirky yet meaningful details that make this stay memorable.
Step Into Prince’s Wardrobe
Upstairs, guests can explore a large closet filled with Paisley-patterned wallpaper and leopard-spotted floors, featuring some of Prince’s most memorable outfits, preserved behind glass. Visitors will also have the chance to try on 80s-inspired clothing, makeup, and accessories, transforming themselves into a rock star for the night.
According to Airbnb spokesperson Ali Killam, “The goal is to immerse guests in The Kid’s world, allowing them to engage with Prince’s legacy in a meaningful way.”
A Budget Stay Fit for a Music Icon
While a stay at such an iconic location might seem unattainable for many, the cost has been set at an incredibly modest $7 per night per person, a nod to Prince’s favourite number. A total of 25 stays are available between 26 October and 14 December, with a maximum of four guests per night.
Airbnb has partnered with Prince’s estate and Paisley Park to bring this opportunity to life. Fans interested in booking can apply online from 2 October to 6 October, with prospective guests being selected at random. As part of the application process, fans will need to explain why they want to stay at this legendary location.
Honouring a Legacy
Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, was one of the most influential musicians of his time, blending rock, funk, and soul in a genre-defying career that sold more than 100 million records worldwide. His iconic songs, including When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, and Little Red Corvette, remain some of the most beloved tracks of the 1980s.
Tragically, Prince died in 2016 at the age of 57 from an accidental overdose at his Paisley Park estate. This Airbnb experience is a celebration of his enduring legacy, allowing fans to not only relive his career-defining moments but also gain a deeper appreciation for the man behind the music.
For those willing to make the pilgrimage to Minneapolis, travelling in a Little Red Corvette might be the perfect touch.
