Hotel Chocolat has announced a pivotal executive appointment by promoting Lysa Hardy to chief executive officer, following its acquisition by Mars at the close of last year. This major shift in leadership was officially confirmed as Hardy took on her new role at the beginning of the month, succeeding co-founder Angus Thirlwell, who now assumes the position of president of Hotel Chocolat.
Lysa Hardy joined Hotel Chocolat in 2018 and has been instrumental in significant growth endeavours, doubling the size of the UK business within five years and spearheading the creation of the Velvetiser Hot Chocolate category. Prior to her appointment as CEO, she served as the UK managing director and group marketing officer.
In November of the previous year, confectionery giant Mars completed its takeover of Hotel Chocolat, in a deal valuing the business at £534 million. Under Mars’ ownership, Hotel Chocolat has embarked on an ambitious expansion strategy, including opening 20 new stores within the next 18 months. These stores are set to feature a new concept that effectively showcases the retailer’s extensive range of chocolate products.
The retailer’s growth initiatives have extended beyond conventional offerings. Last month, as part of this expansion, Hotel Chocolat launched its first bakery and introduced a hot food selection within the Velvetiser Café format—indicating a diversified approach under Hardy’s strategic oversight.
Previously, Hardy has held numerous high-ranking positions, including a non-executive role at Superdry and key roles at Joules and Holland & Barrett. Her extensive experience in both retail and marketing domains is expected to be a valuable asset in propelling Hotel Chocolat forward, emphasizing both innovation and business acumen.
Lysa Hardy’s appointment as CEO marks a new chapter of innovative growth for Hotel Chocolat under Mars’ ownership.
