Asda has initiated a strategic move to update IT systems in smaller stores as part of its ambitious Project Future initiative. This decision aims to prevent disruptions during the peak Christmas shopping season. Asda’s Project Future is acknowledged as the largest systems implementation program in Europe, entailing the separation of over 2,500 systems from its former parent company, Walmart.
Dedicated to enhancing its technological infrastructure, Asda plans to convert approximately 850 sites, encompassing petrol stations, smaller supermarkets, and convenience stores, to state-of-the-art systems. “We’re continuing to deliver different aspects of the program at pace,” remarked Asda’s Chief Digital Officer, Matt Kelleher, signaling a focused approach even amidst potential challenges.
Larger superstores and complex depots are scheduled for system upgrades starting early January, aligning with the conclusion of the hectic holiday period. Asda describes this decision as “sensible and pragmatic,” catering to customer needs for a seamless Christmas experience.
Asda underscores that the comprehensive changes under Project Future will facilitate the company’s complete disentanglement from Walmart systems by leveraging enhanced data capabilities and operational fine-tuning. They have already transitioned multiple domains, including finance, checkouts, and human resources, as well as introduced significant technologies like 16,500 new checkouts and 28,000 Scan & Go devices.
Over the past nine months, Asda has achieved several milestones, such as converting 20 depots and migrating over 9.6 million orders to a new digital platform. The launch of a novel store picking system further underscores their efforts to optimize the daily processing of over four million items from delivery to store shelves.
Asda’s strategic focus on upgrading IT systems in smaller outlets ensures a robust and customer-centric approach during the festive period, setting a strong foundation for future transitions.
