Several UK supermarkets have urgently recalled pastry products over contamination concerns.
- Compleat Food Group detected metal and plastic contaminants in their products.
- Affected items include sausage rolls, cheese & onion rolls, and steak and ale pies.
- Customers can return these products to the stores for a full refund, no receipt required.
- The implicated production sites have resumed operation after addressing the issue.
In an unexpected move, major UK supermarkets have pulled numerous own-label pastry items from their shelves due to potential contamination with metal and plastic. This decision follows a discovery by chilled foods supplier Compleat Food Group, which detected these contaminants via their metal detectors, prompting the recall.
The recalls affect 20 product ranges, notably including everyday items such as sausage rolls, cheese & onion rolls, and steak and ale pies. The products are deemed ‘unsafe to eat,’ according to an alert issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
Consumers who have purchased these items are advised to return them to the respective stores, namely Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Aldi, to receive a full refund. Notably, the process is simplified as there is no requirement for a purchase receipt.
The spokesperson for Compleat Food Group stated that upon identifying the problem, the affected product lines were immediately halted and internally assessed. After rectifying the detected fault, production has since resumed normally.
Tesco has expressed regret for any disruption caused, with a spokesperson acknowledging the seriousness of the contamination and emphasizing customer safety. Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s has declared that customer safety is paramount and has recalled six of its own products as a preventive measure.
The swift action by these supermarkets underscores their commitment to consumer safety amid these contamination concerns.
