The data from Clarity Health Insurance underscores a substantial shift in consumer behavior. Over the past three years, interest in ‘private health insurance’ soared by 83%, with monthly searches currently reaching 14,800 compared to 8,100 in June 2021. This not only signifies a growing inclination towards private healthcare but also highlights the increasing need for clarity in the insurance market.
Searches for broader terms such as ‘health insurance’ have similarly experienced a 50% rise, increasing from 12,100 in June 2021 to 18,100 in June 2024. Other specific queries, including ‘compare health insurance’ and ‘private healthcare’, mirror this trend with a 50% increase each, and the stark 122% growth in queries about the cost of healthcare indicates a more cost-aware consumer base.
The term ‘NHS waiting times’ has surged by an astounding 177%. This substantial increase suggests a mounting concern among the public regarding the efficiency and timeliness of services offered by the NHS, prompting more individuals to consider private health insurance as a viable alternative.
Supporting this trend, industry data reveals that private medical insurance admissions reached unprecedented levels, with 13,000 more insured admissions in the last quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, marking a 9% increase.
Kyle Godden, Managing Director at Clarity Health Insurance, noted the link between the pressures on the NHS and the rising demand for private medical insurance (PMI), stating: “With the pressures on the NHS, it’s no surprise that more consumers are considering private healthcare.” He also highlighted the challenges faced by clients with pre-existing conditions when seeking PMI and stressed the importance of educating consumers on how policies operate.
The remarkable growth in consumer interest in private health insurance underscores the challenges faced by the public healthcare system and highlights the need for greater transparency and guidance in the health insurance market.
