A major development is underway in Chadderton, where Inspired Global Cuisine (IGC), in collaboration with Ergo, is poised to establish a food processing hub. This venture is a significant economic boost for Oldham, particularly as it will address the recent closure of the Yodel distribution center in Shaw, which resulted in the loss of 350 jobs. Such initiatives reflect the critical role planning plays in fostering employment and economic growth.
The proposed site, located on Lydia Becker Way, will house a comprehensive warehouse setup covering over 33,000 square meters, complemented by 10,000 square meters dedicated to office facilities. This development proposes to employ between 550 to 760 staff members, with 200 positions earmarked specifically for local residents. The modern infrastructure will also accommodate over 300 car parking spaces, enhancing accessibility for employees.
During a recent planning meeting, Councillor Peter Davies emphasized the importance of this development, stating: “This is why we have planning. It brings employment to the area, jobs.” His remarks underscore the strategic advantage of leveraging planning applications to catalyze community employment opportunities without directly burdening the council’s financial resources.
IGC’s application describes the facility as primarily a food distribution center, intending to operate continuously throughout the day. An IGC spokesperson noted: “The proposed change of use will facilitate in the region of 550 jobs, almost all of which will be full time. It is anticipated approximately 300 of these will be staff moving from their existing premises, but with approximately 200 new roles created initially, which will be primarily filled by local residents.”
The project’s approval by Oldham Council was unanimous, highlighting broad support for the initiative. However, it faces some opposition due to concerns about potential noise and odour emissions, given its proximity to Radclyffe School and residential areas. Council officers have confirmed that any further modifications to the site will require specific planning permission, ensuring ongoing oversight and community engagement.
The establishment of the Inspired Global Cuisine facility is a promising development for Chadderton’s economic landscape, bringing substantial employment opportunities to the area.
