In a significant economic development, British retail sales have soared to the highest levels in two years. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that annual retail sales volumes jumped by 2.5%, beating the anticipated 1.5% rise. This marks the strongest performance since July 2022 and indicates a considerable uptick from July’s 1.4% annual growth.
On a month-to-month basis, retail sales increased by 1%, with July’s figures revised upwards to 0.7%. This growth has been largely driven by increased consumer spending on food, clothing, footwear, and household items, influenced by end-of-season sales. Supermarkets, in particular, have seen robust performance, experiencing the largest annual rise in food sales since the summer of 2021. The chief economist at the ONS, Grant Fitzner, remarked that supermarkets enjoyed their best month since July 2021, with food sales rising as inflation showed signs of easing.
Food spending has increased by 1.6% year-on-year, fueled by a decline in food price inflation to 1.2%. This trend is expected to contribute to growing consumer confidence as inflation continues to ease, and interest rates show a downward trend. The Bank of England’s decision to maintain its base rate at 5% with prospects of reductions before year-end offers additional relief to household budgets.
While total household spending has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, the outlook for retailers appears positive. Industry leaders, such as Erin Brookes, managing director at Alvarez & Marsal, are optimistic. Brookes highlighted the anticipation that cooler weather would boost spending on autumn and winter apparel in the coming months.
The positive trajectory of retail sales underscores a recovering economy poised for further growth as economic pressures alleviate.
