In an effort to support the growth of smaller suppliers, the Co-op has unveiled a new brand accelerator scheme. This initiative complements its existing Apiary incubator program, which is aimed at suppliers beginning their retail journey. For the first time, the accelerator will serve both new and existing suppliers, providing a platform for enhanced brand development. The program will open the doors to learning opportunities such as masterclasses, mentor networking, and category buyer support, expanding the potential for suppliers to grow not only on the Co-op shelves but also across the broader market.
A major component of this initiative is the Co-op’s Gift to Give program. This feature allows larger suppliers to lend their support to smaller, emerging businesses, emphasizing collaborative growth and knowledge sharing. A group of ten innovative suppliers, including names such as Bio & Me, Brewgooder, and Dr Wills, will lead this first wave of participants. Rebecca Oliver-Mooney, Co-op’s head of commercial for drinks, frozen, and community buying, highlights the importance of this initiative as an extension of the company’s commitment to embracing diversity and inclusivity within the supplier community.
Oliver-Mooney further elaborates, “This is an exciting development, the addition of an accelerator scheme to our Apiary means we can work with small suppliers at different stages of their journeys.” The Co-op seeks purpose-led suppliers, particularly those from under-represented communities or demographics, aligning with its strong cooperative values. By engaging with these suppliers directly, the Co-op aims to foster the entrepreneurial spirit of these challenger brands, helping them achieve accelerated growth and success within the retail space.
The Co-op’s accelerator program represents a strategic step forward in nurturing diverse supplier growth and fostering market inclusivity.
