Lidl is making significant strides towards achieving its net-zero emissions goal by announcing new sustainability targets. In an effort to combat climate change, Lidl aims to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 70% from 2019 to 2030. Having already achieved a notable 52% reduction since 2019, the company is firmly on its path towards this ambitious target.
Further emphasizing its commitment, Lidl has set plans to address Scope 3 emissions, which account for over 90% of its total emissions. From a 2022 baseline, the supermarket aims to cut these emissions by 35% by 2034. This reflects its commitment to tackling the more challenging aspects of carbon emissions across its supply chain.
Additionally, Lidl is targeting a reduction in agriculture, forestry, and other land use (FLAG) greenhouse gas emissions by 42.4% over the same timeline. This aligns with its broader strategy to address environmental impacts from various operational areas.
The company is not working alone on this journey. Lidl has acknowledged the crucial role of collaboration with its suppliers, ensuring that strategic partners responsible for 75% of product-related Scope 3 emissions align with the Science Based Targets Initiative by 2026. This initiative demonstrates Lidl’s commitment to sustainable development and climate change mitigation through concrete action plans shared with its supply chain partners.
Ryan McDonnell, CEO of Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s determination: “Tackling climate change is a huge priority for us at Lidl.” He highlighted the importance of customer engagement and supplier collaboration in developing more sustainable products, underscoring Lidl’s mission to balance sustainability with affordability for consumers.
Lidl’s proactive approach to sustainability underscores its dedication to achieving a more environmentally responsible business model.
