Nestlé is pioneering a significant sustainability initiative this festive season with the introduction of a novel paper tub for its Quality Street chocolates. This trial will be conducted in select Tesco supermarkets, marking a noteworthy step in the brand’s ongoing efforts to enhance environmental sustainability through innovative packaging solutions.
In total, more than 200,000 paper tubs are set to be distributed during the trial period, collectively containing around 150 tonnes of Quality Street chocolates. This change represents Nestlé’s commitment to substantially minimize the use of virgin plastic by incorporating recyclable materials into its product packaging.
The newly developed packaging retains the iconic Quality Street purple and is adorned with gold foil, providing a visually appealing yet environmentally friendly solution. A key feature of the paper tubs is the integrated re-close mechanism, ensuring that the containers can be securely closed after opening, thereby protecting the contents until they are fully consumed.
Quality Street is not only evaluating the receptivity of the new packaging with consumers but is also gathering insights from supply chain and in-store teams at Tesco. This comprehensive evaluation will contribute to the brand’s effort to further innovate and enhance the sustainability of its packaging. According to Jemma Handley, the Senior Brand Manager at Quality Street, the introduction of the paper tub is the result of extensive care and effort, marking them as the first major manufacturer to trial such packaging during the Christmas season.
The trial’s design has been tailored specifically for a paper-based product, aligning with Quality Street’s established brand aesthetics, and importantly, does not compromise the taste that consumers expect and enjoy. Moreover, this new packaging supports a unique consumer behavior by accommodating the return of wrappers into the tub, which can then be directly placed into household recycling.
In 2022, Quality Street began its sustainability journey by switching to recyclable paper packaging for its twist-wrapped sweets. This transition led to the removal of nearly 2 billion pieces of packaging material by replacing traditional double-layered foil and cellulose with single-layer paper wraps.
Nestlé’s trial of paper tubs for Quality Street marks a significant step in reducing plastic use and enhancing sustainability in packaging.
