Tesco’s Winter Food Collection initiative received an impressive response from customers, who donated an equivalent of 1.9 million meals composed of long-life food items. This initiative ran from November 25 to 30 and aimed to support the efforts of charities FareShare and the Trussell Trust during the critical pre-Christmas period. Besides the food donations, customers contributed over £340,000 by simply rounding up their bills at the checkout and through the supermarket’s online donation facilities, as reported by The Grocer.
Tesco CEO Ken Murphy recognized the extraordinary generosity of the customers, stating, “I just want to say a huge thank you to every single person who donated items at this year’s Winter Food Collection. Their generosity is always so amazing and really helps to make a huge impact in communities across the UK supported by Trussell and FareShare.” This sentiment emphasizes the tangible difference these donations make in aiding communities.
Concurrently, following this trend of community support, other major retailers like M&S and Ocado are actively engaging in similar charitable activities. As part of the King’s Coronation Food Project, M&S along with its partners 2 Sisters Food Group and Valeo Foods Group, plans to donate 100,000 Christmas dinners through FareShare. Meanwhile, Ocado continues its support for the London-based charity The Felix Project by contributing over 73,380 meals.
Generosity from Tesco customers and other retailers significantly supports food charities during the festive season.
