Tesco has achieved its highest market share in seven years, securing 28.1% as of December. This marks a significant milestone since 2017, showcasing its robust market presence.
Supermarket sales are set to surpass £13 billion over the festive period for the first time. This expected growth highlights the strong consumer demand in the retail sector during this season.
Sainsbury’s also saw an increase, with its market share rising slightly to 15.9%, boosted by a 4.7% increase in spending. Jointly, Tesco and Sainsbury’s now capture a combined market share nearing 44%.
In the online grocery segment, Ocado outperformed the broader market with an 8.7% sales increase, despite the online market growing by just 3.6%. Ocado now holds a 1.8% share, with total online grocery spending reaching £4.2 billion over the same period.
Lidl continues its upward trajectory, becoming the fastest-growing brick-and-mortar grocer with a 6.6% increase in sales and a rise in market share to 7.7%. The store saw a nearly 10% increase in customer visits year-on-year.
This period of growth across various retail channels underscores a vibrant grocery market during the holiday season.
