An international hotel company has ambitiously proposed the establishment of a new Fairfield by Marriott hotel in Middlesbrough. This development, which includes 200 rooms, is poised to begin construction by early summer next year should it receive the necessary approvals.
The Middlesbrough Development Corporation Board is gearing up to make pivotal decisions this week concerning the hotel’s operator and the choice of construction contractors. The proposed site sits prominently on the corner of Borough Road, adjacent to Union Street and Hartington Road. Their recommendations will focus on approving Cycas as the preferred operator and Wates as the lead contractor.
Having teamed up with seasoned property developers iMpeC and Buccleuch Property, the corporation looks to rejuvenate Gresham comprehensively. This vision involves creating top-tier accommodation to hold onto talent in Middlesbrough, bolster Teesside University’s growth, and pave the way for up to 4,000 jobs. According to Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke, the land earmarked for this development is critical as an entrance to the town, requiring strategic enhancement to foster community growth.
The initial phase of Gresham’s masterplan outlines obtaining planning permission for the construction of five mews houses and over 230 built-to-rent properties. Additionally, a proposed block aims to accommodate more than 400 students, thereby fortifying Middlesbrough’s appeal as an academic hub. Neil McMillan, Director of iMpeC, disclosed plans to deliver a transformative project that enhances accommodation offerings, thereby attracting students and supporting the town’s evolving sectors including digital, professional, and advanced manufacturing industries. The hotel is an integral part of this offering, ensuring lodging for investors and the influx of workers involved in various town and Teesworks projects.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, chair of the Middlesbrough Development Corporation, hailed Marriott’s involvement as a tremendous endorsement of their regional development plans, reflecting a significant trust in the town’s potential. Houchen stressed the importance of initiating construction promptly, emphasizing a communal effort to bring this landmark project to fruition.
The proposed Middlesbrough hotel presents promising opportunities for economic and community growth.
