- Renowned investors and industry leaders back Arborea’s innovative approach to addressing pressing global challenges.
Arborea, the startup pushing boundaries in climate tech, has successfully raised £4.1 million in a recent funding round. Headquartered in both London and Portugal, this funding will propel the company towards its goal of launching a commercial-scale protein production facility. This initiative is centered around the proprietary Biosolar Leaf system, which Arborea asserts can revolutionize how we produce protein sustainably.
This innovative system aims to produce a significantly higher output of protein per square mile than what is achievable through traditional agriculture. Unlike conventional methods, the Biosolar Leaf employs micro-plants, such as marine microalgae, that not only foster protein growth but also absorb carbon, thus contributing to a reduction in atmospheric carbon levels. In addition, the process efficiently generates breathable oxygen, adding environmental benefits.
Water usage is another critical feature of this technology. The system requires about five times less water compared to soy cultivation and an astonishing 40 times less than the water required for raising livestock. This efficiency in water use marks a vital step towards more sustainable food production.
Julian Melchiorri, the founder and CEO of Arborea, emphasizes the transformative potential of this technology: ‘This funding signifies a major leap forward for us as we aim to change global food production with our Biosolar Leaf technology. By creating multifunctional protein that is clean in taste and adaptable, we address both food security and climate change.’
The investment was spearheaded by Indico Capital Partners and supported by Banco Português de Fomento. Stephan de Moraes from Indico Capital underscores the potential impact of Arborea’s technology on the food industry, highlighting its capacity to outpace traditional agriculture and animal production in protein yield. He reinforces Arborea’s positioning as a leader in sustainable food production through innovative measures.
Arborea is poised to redefine protein production and contribute significantly to global sustainability efforts.
