The UK government’s collaboration with Greenpixie marks a significant step in integrating environmental consciousness into public digital services. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has appointed the London-based startup to evaluate how the new One Login system affects the environment. This system serves as a gateway for UK citizens to access a multitude of government services efficiently through a single entry point.
Greenpixie, founded in 2021 and headquartered near Covent Garden, specializes in providing data on the ecological footprint of cloud-based systems. Its role in this initiative is to meticulously measure the energy and water consumption required by the servers running the One Login platform. Such precise metrics will enable the government to understand and mitigate the environmental impact more effectively.
One Login is part of the government’s effort to reform public service delivery by leveraging technological advancements. Digital Minister Feryal Clark emphasized the dual commitment to technological progress and environmental stewardship, stating, “While we make the most of technology to overhaul public services, we must make sure we are leading by example in protecting our climate.”
Greenpixie’s CEO, John Ridd, expressed enthusiasm about this partnership, highlighting the ongoing efforts to advance One Login’s green policies. He remarked, “One Login is continuing to iterate, develop, and improve its sustainability practices every day. It’s a privilege to assist the team on their mission to create the greenest digital service in government.”
The collaboration between the UK government and Greenpixie showcases a forward-thinking approach to balancing innovation with environmental responsibility.
