Gwent Police confirmed on Tuesday evening that the victim, who had been in a life-threatening condition in hospital, had sadly passed away following the incident outside The Picture House on Bethcar Street.
The alleged assault outside the Wetherspoon pub took place between 11:30 PM on Friday, February 20, and 12:15 AM on Saturday, February 21, according to Gwent Police. A 30-year-old man from Cardiff, who was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, has now been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
Investigation Continues Following Fatal Assault
Gwent Police said their investigation into the fatal incident is “continuing at pace.” The force has been working to gather evidence and interview witnesses who may have been in the area of The Picture House during the time of the alleged assault. Officers are treating the death as suspicious and are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry.
The suspect is currently being questioned by detectives at a police station in the Gwent area. Authorities have not released the names of either the victim or the suspect, pending further inquiries and notification of family members. The victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Appeal for Witnesses and Evidence
Police have issued an urgent appeal for anyone who witnessed the alleged assault to come forward. Additionally, investigators are seeking CCTV footage or dashcam recordings from the Bethcar Street area during the relevant timeframe. The force emphasized that even seemingly minor details could prove crucial to their investigation.
However, authorities have indicated that not all potential witnesses have yet made contact with police. The area around The Picture House is a busy location in Ebbw Vale, particularly during weekend evenings, and officers believe several people may have information that could assist the investigation. Anyone who has not yet spoken to police is urged to do so as soon as possible.
How to Contact Police
Members of the public can assist the Gwent Police investigation through multiple channels. The force can be contacted via their website, by calling 101, or through direct messages on their Facebook or X social media channels. All contacts should reference log number 2600055384 to ensure information is properly directed to the investigating team.
Meanwhile, those who prefer to remain anonymous can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or visit the organization’s website. Crimestoppers operates independently of the police and guarantees anonymity to those providing information. This option may be particularly valuable for individuals who have concerns about being identified as witnesses.
Community Impact and Safety Concerns
The fatal assault outside the Wetherspoon pub has raised concerns among residents in Ebbw Vale about safety in the town center. In contrast to typical weekend evenings, the area around Bethcar Street has seen increased police presence since the incident occurred. Local authorities have not announced any specific changes to policing arrangements in response to the death.
The Picture House is a well-known establishment in the community, and the incident has shocked many local residents. Wetherspoon, the pub chain operator, has not released a public statement regarding the alleged assault that occurred outside their premises. The company typically cooperates fully with police investigations involving incidents near their establishments.
Police have not confirmed when the 30-year-old suspect will appear before magistrates, as inquiries remain ongoing. The Crown Prosecution Service will need to review evidence before charging decisions are made, though the timeframe for this process remains unclear at this stage.
